German Covered Apple Cake

Dough:
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 cup butter or margarine, cold

Sift flour and baking powder on a board or table. Make a hole in the middle, put sugar, vanilla and egg in the hole and mix to a smooth consistency. Add the cold butter in small pieces and work quickly until the dough forms a ball. Use 3/4 of the dough for the bottom and sides of the cake. (Use a 9-inch spring form pan.) Fill with
precooked apples. Put the remaining dough on top of filling. Bake at 350 to 375 for 30 minutes.

Apple filling:
3 lbs. apples, peeled and cored
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 c. water
2 slices lemon

Cook apples with the sugar, water and lemon slices until tender but not mushy. Drain and cool. Remove lemon slices.

Glaze:
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 T. hot water

Mix together and spread on "almost cooled" cake
